Lunch and Snacks

Lunch Program

For a nominal fee, parents may choose to sign their child up for our hot lunch program. Each day our school serves a balanced and nutritious hot lunch for the children, and parents are welcome to come and eat lunch with their child (please call ahead!) Menus for the month are posted online and on the parent information board. A record of meals served during the year will be kept in the office. 

On the child's enrollment form there is a place to list any food allergies that he or she may have. Parents must detail these and any other conditions or preferences in regards to food so that the staff can act accordingly.

Nutrition

Children who do not sign up for hot lunch must bring their own lunches to school. Please make sure that enough food is included in your child's lunch to provide a healthy balance of the food groups. Any uneaten food will be sent home to help parents determine appropriate amounts for their children. The school observes a "low sugar" (sugar listed as fifth ingredient or lower) policy in the interest of the children's health and behavior. 
 

Snacks

As part of the children's Practical Life Activities, the school will have a monthly snack host/hostess sign up calendar. This will allow the children to experience the full process of creating a meal: shopping, preparing and serving. Each month parents will sign up to bring the snack on a specific day. Teachers will provide suggestions that meet our school's nutrition guidelines. Your child will help prepare and serve the snack that day. Children experience great joy and pride in the process. A snack will always be served whether we have a snack host/hostess or not. Please plan on serving 24 children. During the month of a child’s birthday, his or her snack day will be scheduled as close as possible to that day. The child’s snack day will also be his or her day to "show and tell." The child may bring an object from home or an idea to share with the class. 

It will be most helpful for the snack to be ready to serve in child-sized portions. Each snack must include two of the following food groups:

  • Milk or dairy
  • Fruit or vegetables
  • Meat or protein substitute
  • Bread or equivalent



If necessary, the school will supplement any snack in order to meet the nutritional requirements as listed above.
